SUPER MARKLAND STAY ON A WINNER

Markland Hill A extended their 100 per cent record in Section A with a sixth straight win at Oakgate B. But the score line did not do justice to the third bottom team. Oakgate’s first lady J. Schofield partnered by P. Thompson lost their two mixed games to Markland Hill’s Julie Lowe and Bill Hamblett 21-16 and 22-20. Tracy Walker and Roger Taylor then took their mixed 21-14 and 21-17 against M. Scott and K. Gibbins. Oakgate halted Hill’s momentum in the second of the first men’s games when Thompson and third man Liam Walsh beat Taylor and Alan Crowe 21-17. The second set of ladies games went the way of Markland Hill when Julie Lowe with Flatman beat Schofield and third lady M. Parkinson 21-13 and 21-15. The final men’s games of the night were split with Markland Hill’s Crowe and Bill Hamblett taking the first to 22-20 and Walsh with K. Gibbons taking the final game 21-14.

In B Section third placed Forrest C beat second bottom Deane A 12-6. The high-flyers got the better of some tight games to lead 8-2 after the mixed. Deane stalwarts, Janice Jackson and third lady Teresa Gough, kept their side’s hopes alive when they fought hard to take both games 23-21, 21-15 against Judith Mealor and third lady Jennifer Ball. Tony Augustyniak and third man Steve Irvine took both the men’s games 21-12 from Deane’s Kanti Mistry and Brian Strickland. Gough and Jean Smith who took both games 21-16 from Forrest’s Ball and Chris Travis but this was not enough as Forrest’s Irvine and John Mealor then beat Strickland with Suresh Patel 21-13 and 21-14 in the final two games.

Lowly Smithills A won a thriller with Westhoughton D in C Section which went to the final game before they emerged 10-8 victors. The first mixed games went to Smithills when Lorraine Shepherd and Ken Blood beat Westhoughton D’s Val Marsden and Brian Hutchinson 21-15 and 21-19. Smithills second couple Linda Singh and Malcolm Rolfe lost their first game 21-18 against Lisa Caton and Nigel Muddiman before taking the second 21-19. Westhoughton D’s third couple Louise Atherton and Peter Nicolson, beat Diane Leigh and Keith Stokes taking both games 21-18 and 21-11, to keep the score even. The match remained tight with some high scoring games, and it was not until the last men’s game that Stokes and Rolfe took the last game 21-15 to win it for Smithills.
