Sharples B won a thriller with Forrest D in a game that went to the last match of the night in Section B. Sharples second couple, Kath Heywood and Steve Duckworth, took the first mixed 21-14 against Forrest’s Gerry Fielding and Greg White. The latter then took the second 22-20 in a nail-biting finish before the next four games were won by Sharples. Fielding and White then won both their games against Sharples’ first lady Louise Enderby, and Andy Woods, 21-19, 21-16. Sharples’ Heywood and Duckworth won the first of their second mixed games 21-17, and Forrest’s Dureen Dixon and Paul Skivington took the next 21-15. Forrest’s third lady, Karen Holding, and Fielding took the first of the ladies’ games 21-15, but Sharples’ third lady, Marian Anderson, and Enderby countered by winning the next 23-21. Sharples’ third man, G. Fairclough, partnered by Woods, clinched the first of their men’s games 21-19, and Forrest’s Ray Schofield and Greg White replied by winning the second game 21-19. It was left until the final men’s games to decide the winner with Sharples’ Fairclough and Duckworth winning a hard-fought first 22-20, and Forrest could not seal the draw with the last match which Sharples claimed 21-13 to clinch victory.
Section D Leaders Bolton Lads and Girls Club A earned a resounding 17-1 victory over the club’s B team who are also well-placed in third. Both sides were made up of brothers, sisters and cousins, and the score was hard on the B team who pushed their opponents all the way in a number of matches. The A team, made up of ladies, Emma Dean, Abi Sewart, Piumi Algama, and men Shezhad Khan, Praney Lad and Sureni Lad, got the better of the B’s Sam Sewart, Nalisha Patel, Kirsty Patterson and Lee Bailey, Zaryab Khan and Inayate Ali. The B team’s third man Inayate Ali with Lee Bailey managed to win the exciting first of their men’s games 23-21.
